EDUCATION OF GDPT
Buddhist Youth Association (GĐPT) is a Buddhist organization founded with the purpose of educating youths to become true Buddhists, help building a society according to Buddhism. Thus, the GĐPT’s education is based on Buddhist education to transmit the spirit of Buddhism to the generations to achieve the purposes of the Organization. Simply, GĐPT’s education is education for a better and purer mind. Before speaking about the education of GĐPT, we should know briefly the basic characteristics of Buddhist education.
1. BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF BUDDHIST EDUCATION Buddhist education has the following basic characteristics:
- Humanity: Buddhist education focus on people, help people from ignorance to archiving enlightenment, liberation and deliverance. Guide people to recognize who he is? For example, that we are a collective five aggregates; is a combination of 12 Conditions of Causes and Effects etc.
- Ethnicity: Buddhist education educates us to know our origin, who our ancestors were, where our country is, and what the history of our people were etc. If we do not know, we would have lost our root.
- Liberation: Buddhism does not advocate enchanting and enslave followers under the power of a supreme being. Buddhist education teaches us to open our mind and archive wisdom, accept and use the world’s essence, the achievements of modern science, know to open your mind to accept the new knowledge to have a beautiful life... not just standing at put to embrace our pasts, our countries, our families ... and becoming obsolete.
- Practical: Buddhism does not teach useless theories; instead Buddhism teaches the most practical theories so people could achieve enlightenment and liberation, liberation even in this life. Buddhism is not mysterious, instead it can be tested and practice at present moment. Buddhism does not have the so-called supernatural revelation as other religions. Buddhism not only requires learners to learn, but also to reflect and practice the teachings in every minute (Văn-Tư-Tu) (Listen, Think, and Practice).
- Generosity, tolerance: Buddhism does not force or impose the absurd dogma. All teachings of Buddhism are like medicine. Treatment is depending on the disease. If one wants to get better then take the medication. No one is forced to.
- True Value: Buddhism aims at the true value, helping people know the truth of life and live free despite all the changes and suffering in life. That's the ultimate goal. Buddhism does not train people to be academics nor to train a sangha to govern believers. For that purpose, Buddhism values the quality of education rather than the number of followers.
2. EDUCATION OF GĐPT VBY Leaders often are not trained from a education school, sometimes without a degree comparing to scholars or philosophers ... but with a heart of love, understanding children, belief in the Three Jewels and Buddhist Youth Association, the leaders have been successful in educating the children live according to Buddhism. The GĐPT education includes:
- Responsibility: Because of love for the children, VBY leaders constantly seek the appropriate method to guide them. With a sense of responsibility, VBY leaders care for VBY as brothers, sisters, and friends to be closer to them.
- Practical: GĐPT Education educates VBY the practical teachings to improve their minds to become good children, good students, and good Buddhists. GĐPT Education bases on physiological and psychological of each age group to come up with the appropriate educational methods.
- Guidance and Encouragement: GĐPT Education teaches the Buddhist Dharma in very simple and easy ways to understand and practice, not turning youths into blind believers. Facilitating youths to develop thinking and apply what they have learned in GĐPT to real life, both in the family and society.
- Confidence and Autonomy: the Buddha taught, "Every being is a future Buddha." GĐPT Education guides students with confidence and autonomy. The Leaders not only teach but also practice to achieve confidence and autonomy and advance on the path to enlightenment.
- Independence: GĐPT Education teaches youths to better themselves. The Buddha’s teaching is only the torch and no one else other than themselves must light up the torch.
- Adapting to conditions yet fundamentally unchanged: GĐPT Education is not rigid and must be able to adapt to the conditions, flexible but always preserve the purpose of the Organization.
3. CONCLUSIONS GĐPT’s motto is BI - TRÍ - DŨNG (COMPASSION - WISDOM - COURAGE). Buddhist Education is to apply the Dharma in daily life. GĐPT Education caries both purposes of Buddhist Education and the Organization's and that is Compassion - Wisdom - Courage. An education that bases on responsibility, practicality, harmony, openness, confidence and autonomy, independence, and always adapt to changing conditions but not losing the essence will surely guide youths to become the useful children of the family, the Organization, the nation and the society. This is the most beautiful contribution to the promotion and conservation of Buddhism.
